AMFM Fest

Since moving to the desert less than two months ago, I determined that I wanted to meet as many cool locals as possible, people who enjoy the arts and want to start something creative that gives back to the community. Well, Mr. Henrich and Mr. Galarza have created something amazing: They are the founders of the AMFM festival, an arts, music and film festival that is taking place right now in Cathedral City, a shot away from Palm Springs and my Kasbah. Although, this is the very first edition, this festival is showcasing an impressive array of documentaries and films, beautiful art works by talented photographers and is also jam packed with exciting events such as live bands performing at the Cathedral City Town Plaza and DJ sets rocking pool parties at different hotels. The greatest thing about this festival is its purpose of bringing the community together and mentoring relationships with kids through panel discussions and more.

The first day kicked off with a slate of documentaries and films at the Mary Pickford Theatre, a free performance by the Miracle Dolls benefiting the Boys & Girls Club, a Gala with DJs, a celebrities Go Kart racing, and an after party at the Ace Hotel. More great things are happening today and throughout the weekend with the AMFM award ceremony and the presenting of the Fourth Annual Dennis Lee Hopper Award to actor and artist Viggo Mortensen.

I’m blown away by the dedication and commitment of the founders; it just shows that the vision of two people alone, can go a long way by creating something great for the for all and inspiring both kids and artists. This is hopefully the first edition of many to come and the beginning of a cultural revolution that will put Cat City on the map.
